Established in 1991, Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) is a new graduate school without undergraduate programs.
NAIST provides high-quality education and world-class research in information, biological, and materials science, and their interdisciplinary fields.
NAIST offers optimum education and research environments to foster talented researchers and engineers who will play active roles globally, mainly in the fields of science and technology.
Step towards your future and challenge yourself at NAIST.
We are waiting for you at the forefronts of science and technology.
Nara Institute of Science and Technology
1. An ancient and historic location: Nara
NAIST is located in Japan’s historic Nara Prefecture, home of the first official capital of Japan. Nara has an incredibly rich history as a center for international trade and relations. In addition to convenient access to domestic and international transportation, Nara is located between traditional Kyoto and bustling Osaka.
2. Graduate School of Science and Technology provides unique academic experiences
The Graduate School of Science and Technology at NAIST offers graduate education and training in seven education programs which offer specialized knowledge and experience while encouraging growth across traditional academic fields. In addition to traditional master’s and Ph.D. courses, double degree programs with international partner institutions and other opportunities for globally-focused education are offered, Approximately 1000 master’s and Ph.D. students are enrolled across the various programs, working with more than 200 graduate program faculty members.
3. NAIST’s guiding concept: education through research
Research-focused Environment: NAIST was established without undergraduate programs to allow the faculty to commit themselves towards achieving superior research results to lead their respective fields.
Research-Based Education: Through the research of our accomplished faculty and collaboration with industry and academic partner institutions, NAIST’s students learn both in traditional settings and through hands-on experience at the forefronts of science and technology.
4. Campus globalization: NAIST’s growing international community
NAIST is actively engaged in globalization efforts to promote its global standing and to enhance its on-campus international environment. Through our expanding network of international partner institutions and active student recruitment, NAIST has been able to grow the campus international community with excellent students from 37 different countries and regions. While the international student population is centered on Southeast Asian countries, the population is balanced, realizing a campus diversity.
In order to facilitate international students and researchers in making the most of their time in Japan, NAIST established the Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) to help students and scholars in a wide spectrum of both academic and private matters, from cultural issues in the lab and on campus to support for their accompanying family members.
