Founded in 1907 as Japan’s third national university, Tohoku University has a long history rooted in the principles of “Research First,” “Open Door,” and “Practice-Oriented Research and Education.” These core values have guided the university for more than a century, producing excellent graduates, generating numerous research achievements, and contributing to peaceful and just societal development.

Tohoku University is located across four campuses in Sendai, the cultural and economic center of the Tohoku region in northeastern Japan. Sendai, known as the “City of Trees,” combines the conveniences of a modern urban environment with abundant natural scenery, distinct seasons, and rich cultural events. The city’s setting between the ocean and mountains also offers easy access to hot springs, ski resorts, and iconic scenic spots.

In 2024, Tohoku University became the first university in Japan to be designated a “University for International Research Excellence,” a distinction recognizing its leadership in advanced research and international collaboration. The university has also been ranked #1 in Japan in the Times Higher Education Japan University Rankings for five consecutive years (2021–2025).

Tohoku University comprises 10 undergraduate faculties, 15 graduate schools, 3 professional graduate schools, 6 research institutes, and numerous research centers. The university has approximately 18,000 students, including 3,777 international students from 94 countries and regions, creating a diverse and research-intensive academic environment supported by a strong global network and extensive partnerships with leading institutions.

Looking ahead, Gateway College, launching in 2027, represents a new educational initiative designed to address complex global challenges. Emphasizing internationality, openness, diversity, and practical learning, Gateway College will allow students to explore multiple academic fields before specializing and prepare them for leadership roles in an increasingly interconnected world.
