A single unified university, free and pursuing peace.

Hiroshima University is a national institution established in Hiroshima, the world’s first atomic bombed city in human history. Based on its founding principle of “a single unified university, free and pursuing peace”, HU has contributed to the creation of a diversified, free and peaceful global community as an exceptional institution of learning in the fields of education, research, medical services, and social contribution.

Comprising 12 schools, 5 graduate schools, an attached research institute, a university hospital, and other facilities, HU is one of the largest comprehensive research universities in Japan.

In terms of education and research, HU was selected as one of 13 universities for the ‘Top Global University Project’ (top type) in 2014, and as one of 13 universities for the ‘WISE (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) Program’ in 2018. The University’s social contributions are evident from its ranking in the ‘Impact Ranking 2024’, which evaluates social contribution capabilities within the framework of the SDGs. HU was ranked among the top 100 in the world in 7 of the 17 SDGs. Hiroshima University has been awarded its first-ever Grand Prizes at the THE Awards Asia 2025, an annual program organized by the UK-based magazine focused on news and issues in higher education, Times Higher Education to recognize exceptional reform efforts by universities across Asia. Among more than 500 entries submitted by institutions throughout the region, Hiroshima University was honored in two of the ten award categories for its outstanding initiatives. This marks a historic achievement, as Hiroshima University becomes the first Japanese institution to receive Grand Prizes in two categories. Across all participating institutions, this represents only the third time such an achievement has been made— following Tsinghua University in China and the National University of Singapore.

HU is also making a concerted effort to become more international and multicultural. As of November. 1, 2025, there are 2,029 international students from 99 countries and regions at HU. Aiming to further expand globally while remaining deeply rooted in the local community, HU will seek to broaden its horizons in the fields of education, research and social contribution, both during and after the coronavirus era.
